ZEISS microscopes to be used for training on high precision manufacturing and materials testing techniques
ZEISS announces it has formed a close collaboration with ASM International, the world’s largest association of metals-centric materials engineers and scientists. Through the collaboration, ASM is adding a combination of light and electron microscopes, including ZEISS Smartzoom 5 automated digital microscopes and ZEISS EVO scanning electron microscopes. ASM International will use the new instruments in advanced metallography training courses designed to instruct members on high precision manufacturing and materials testing techniques. ZEISS is also collaborating with ASM to develop new and more efficient correlative workflows between light and electron microscope systems.
Dedicated to informing, educating and connecting the materials community to solve problems and stimulate innovation around the world, ASM International offers education courses providing hands-on training with the latest state-of-the-art equipment. Advanced metallography and materials science courses are taught by industry veterans and academic leaders at the ASM Training Center in the Cleveland, Ohio headquarters and at customer sites, as well as through online courses and web content.
“ZEISS and ASM International both place a focus on education as an enabler for material science and material testing and advancement in industry, which makes this new expanded collaboration such a great fit,” said Alex Soell, Vice President of Marketing at Carl Zeiss Microscopy, LLC. “We are glad ASM made ZEISS their partner of choice for microscopy and imaging, and we are we are excited to work together to teach students the techniques needed to support the next wave of innovations in such areas as additive manufacturing and 3D printing.”
John Cerne, Senior Manager of Education at ASM International, looks to the collaboration as a way of enriching its educational program with the expertise of ZEISS. “We are always looking for the most effective ways to provide training and were really struck by the enthusiasm ZEISS shows for our educational mission and focus on bringing solutions tailored to our industrial customer base. Their willingness to participate will greatly expand the educational opportunities we can provide members. It will also provide huge benefits to our network of affiliated societies, which each sponsor highly specialized educational initiatives.”
He added, “ZEISS brought us an integrated solution that no one else could offer – an optical microscope and correlation to macro images – which greatly adds to our capabilities. The ZEISS solution will help us better educate users on finding images optically, conducting failure analysis, and performing metallographic interpretations. We are excited to be leveraging that technology for the benefit of ASM students, and look forward to integrating the new equipment with other technology to enable new courses and enhance existing ones.”
Alliances in science, industry and education are common goals of ASM International and the Carl Zeiss Foundation. ZEISS is glad to announce the collaboration in 2016 when the 200th birthday of its founding father Carl Zeiss will be celebrated with many different activities and events around the globe.
